Hi Doctors...

Updated: 1 September 2026

In light of recent changes in the UK medical job market, I’ve been receiving an increasing number of messages from former PLAB candidates who have since obtained GMC registration but are struggling to secure their first NHS job.

I wanted to address this properly by explaining how the current job market situation developed, clarifying the recent changes around medical training prioritisation, sharing some practical advice for doctors looking to secure their first NHS role and explaining some of the different NHS job titles that can be quite confusing when you first start applying.

This guide reflects the situation as it stands now. I’ll continue monitoring developments closely and update it as policies change or new strategies emerge that may help, particularly as “significant NHS experience” is introduced as a priority category, with its exact definition due to be published ahead of the 2027 application round opening in October 2026.
