IMG Careers: NHS Jobs After PLAB

In light of recent changes in the UK medical job market, I’ve been receiving an increasing number of messages from former PLAB candidates who have since obtained GMC registration but are struggling to secure their first NHS job.

I wanted to explain how the NHS job market has changed and what the latest medical training prioritisation rules mean for IMGs. I've also included practical advice on securing your first NHS job, alongside a glossary explaining common NHS doctor job titles.

October 2026 Update: The rules for 2027 specialty training prioritisation have now been confirmed. In 2026, prioritisation applied only to training offers. From 2027, it will also apply to interview invitations. Importantly, NHS experience in non-training posts will not by itself qualify doctors for priority status.
